Privacy Laws and Business International Report |
The new newsletter design enables us to present you with the latest international privacy news and analysis more clearly. Our previous design coincided with the beginning of the 1990’s, when the European Community first presented the Data Protection Draft Directive. We now signal the move into a new phase with the implementation of the Directive into national laws in Western Europe, as in Italy, (p.3). The Directive is also having a catalytic effect in Eastern Europe, as our report on Poland’s new law (p.5) explains. Japan has responded by recently establishing a system of granting privacy protection marks, supervised by a new Supervisory Authority for the Protection of Personal Data (p.10). Both within and outside Europe, our annual directory shows contact details for the ever-increasing number of countries which
have a Data Protection Authority to oversee their national laws (p.19).
From time to time, we explore other topics which are closely related to privacy.
In this edition we feature a report on the European Union's Database Directive (p.17)
and our report on the millenium bug (p.8).
This newsletter brings you not only a new look but also a renewed commitment to providing accurate, relevant and timely content which remains our prime purpose.
We recognise that trying to track privacy across some 50 countries and a host of issues, such as human resources (p.2), electronic commerce and the Internet (pp.14-16) and marketing databases (p.2) remains a major task. As a result, we always welcome reports, publications and constructive comments from readers. In particular, we want to know what you would like to see covered in future editions.
