Privacy Laws and Business International Report |
Much work is being carried out in the UK, US and elsewhere to provide privacy-friendly solutions for e-commerce (p.18-19). Privacy Laws & Business is pleased to announce that we now offer subscribers a free e-mail news service, and the opportunity to have the newsletter in an electronic format (PDF) to be posted on company Intranets. For licensing fee details, please contact me.
A multi-purpose privacy code of conduct has been submitted to the EU Data Protection Working Party. Developed by a group of organisations led by Shell, the code aims at giving organisations practical advice on how to comply with the EU Data Protection Directive (see p. 3-4). The code may be developed into an international standard. We will monitor developments in this field in our future issues.
We bring you news about the new UK notification system (p.6-7). At the time of going to print, Parliament was about to adopt the secondary legislation needed for the UK Data Protection Act 1998 to enter into force on 1st March. Other parliamentary work involving privacy issues is also under way. The Freedom of Information Bill is currently being reviewed in Parliament. The Human Rights Act 1998, which will give an explicit right to privacy for UK data subjects, will enter into force in October this year.
The challenges that the new data protection laws pose to data controllers will be examined in detail at our Annual Conference in July, together with a range of other privacy issues (see p.14). We hope that you will be able to come along!
