Editorial [2000] PLBIRp 11; (2000) 53 Privacy Laws and Business International Report 1

Editorial

Now that the EU Data Protection Directive has been implemented into most Member States' national laws, it is time to look at some sectoral issues. What can be done, for example, in the fields of human resources or electronic commerce? Privacy enhancing technologies and standards to validate them (p. 18-19) may be the answer for shopping online in a privacyfriendly way. The EU is also investigating possibilities for regulation in e-commerce (p.2). In the area of human resources, the issues are somewhat different as the individual cannot always pursue his privacy rights for fear of an adverse reaction from the employer. Some countries, for example Finland, are considering separate data protection legislation for the employment field. In the UK, a code of practice is being drafted. Put your views to the Data Protection Commissioner by attending our Human Resources Consultation Meeting on 13th June (p. 20).

The new UK Act has been in force since 1st March. In this issue, we update you on the latest news with regard to the implementation of the Act (p.12-13). More detailed reports on the new secondary legislation are included in our fourth Compliance Guide on the UK Act.

In Spain, the new Act is now in force, but implementation has already given reason for concern (p.9-11). Many countries worldwide are taking steps to revise their existing laws to follow the EU directive. For example, the Czech Republic is close to having a new law adopted (p.17). For information on other countries, take a look at our annual update on data protection legislative developments in 52 jurisdictions (p.3-8).
