Exchange of letters

between Mr Walter Hallstein, President of the Commission of the European Economic Community, and Mr Jacques Fouques-Duparc, Chairman of the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine, on cooperation between the EEC and the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine

Sir,

I have the honour to inform you, with reference to the wish expressed by the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine, in particular in its decision of 6 July last, and to the exchange of views at which it was represented by Mr Lambert Schaus, Chairman of its working party on transport, that the Commission of the European Economic Community has declared its readiness to establish a liaison between the two organizations based, as far as the Commission is concerned, on the provisions of Article 229 of the Treaty of Rome.

As part of this liaison, the arrangements for which could be worked out at a later date by mutual agreement, the Commission of the European Economic Community would instruct its Director-General for Transport to take part, as suggested by you, in the meetings of the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine.

The Commission, of which I have the honour to be President, hopes, that the proposed liaison will lead to a fuller exchange of information and to closer cooperation between the two organizations on problems of common interest.

I shall be obliged if you will confirm that the proposals set out above are acceptable to the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine.

I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 6 June, in which you were good enough to inform me, with reference to the wish expressed by the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine, in particular in its decision of 6 July last, and to the exchange of views at which it was represented by Mr Lambert Schaus, Chairman of its working party on transport, that the Commission of the European Economic Community has declared its readiness to establish a liaison between the two organizations based, as far as the Commission is concerned, on the provisions of Article 229 of the Treaty of Rome.
